Motshidisi Mohono

Motshidisi Mohono is an award winning Sport Broadcaster – currently plying her trade at SuperSport International and Vision View Sports Radio. She was recently named Journalist of the Year at the 2018 SA Sport Awards – the first woman in the history of the awards to receive the coveted nod. Her stellar work, that garnered the win, included being part of SuperSport’s production team for the England tour to South Africa; anchoring Super Rugby games in studio and travelling to New Zealand to cover the tournament’s final.

Motshidisi joined SuperSport in 2011, after coming third place in the Lady Rugga presenter search. Her first assignment was as co-anchor on “SuperSport Superfan” – a social media show during the 2011 Rugby World Cup. She then joined the SuperSport Blitz team in early 2012, working as a journalist on the 24-hour sports news channel. In 2013, Motshidisi was roped into SuperSport’s Varsity Rugby production team, and has since then, formed an integral part in the growth of the Varsity Sport brand. As part of this brand, she has covered various sporting codes, including Volleyball, 7’s Rugby, Football, Hockey and Netball.

In 2015, Motshidisi’s work ethic and passion garnered her the opportunity to cover the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards in Shanghai, China, where she covered the preaward activities and awards’ red carpet for the channel. Thereafter, covered the festivities inBerlin in 2016. Motshidisi has made her mark in the Netball arena, as well, having presented the Tri-Nations in 2013, when the SPAR Proteas defeated England to clinch the title. From 2014-2016, she covered the Brutal Fruit Netball Premier League and Varsity Netball.

In 2016, she was nominated by her peers, for a GSport4Girls Award in the category “Women in Media: TV” (her second nomination in the category) and subsequently walked away with the award.

Motshidisi has previously co-anchored the Xhosa rugby show PHAKA (Tuesdays at 7pm) on SuperSport, and has anchored major rugby tournaments, including Super Rugby (2017,2018), Currie Cup (2016, 2017, 2018), the British and Irish Lions Tour to New Zealand (2017), and the Springbok end-of-year-tour in 2016, 2017 and 2018.

Radio

Motshidisi is no stranger to the airwaves – having worked at Gauteng-based youth radio station YFM, while studying towards her accounting degree, from April 2008-September 2011. In October 2011, she headed to SA’s biggest urban radio station, METRO FM, as a news and sports anchor where she stayed until March 2015.

Two years later, she joined hybrid station Massiv Metro as the co-host of the DJ Sbu Breakfast and sports anchor. In the year that she was there, Motshidisi ventured into content production having created the football show Massiv XI which she executive produced and was the main host for. While at Massiv Metro, she was also the head of Sports and oversaw the sports team, from July 2017 – July 2018.

Voice Work

Motshidisi Mohono also works as a voice-over artist, having done numerous voice work for SuperSport. In 2018, her big commercial VO came when she voiced the new Shell V Power television advert.

In 2018, Motshidisi also started #MentorshipWithMotshidisi where she spent a day with young women who love sports and aspire to be in the Sports Broadcast space. The group of women spent the day with her on set at Supersport; engaged in a robust discussion around what it means to be a woman in sports and broadcast and ended the day with a pamper session courtesy of Motshidisi – fondly known as The First Lady of Rugby.
