In the wake of the Nelson Mandel 10th year tribute, The Nelson Mandela Foundation in partnership with Phillips have launched their new campaign, ‘Shave To Remember’. The campaign encourages South Africans to shave a path in their hair in reminiscence to Nelson Mandela’s trademark style and embody the values of the South African icon.

“The time is opportune to be addressing the remaining challenges of our multifaced nation and this campaign will help us to remember that.” Said Luzuko Koti, the Director of Communication at the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Koti added that the haircut is about more that starting a trend but rather focuses on encouraging people to reflect and ultimately reignite Mandela’s legacy.

The Shaving Drive began on Youth Day, 16 June, when South Africans were urged to head to their local barber, get the haircut, and take pictures and post them to social media using the hashtag #ShaveToRemember.

On Saturday, 30 June 2018, the Foundation with partner Phillips hosted a ‘Day To Remember’ at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Johannesburg. The foundation brought 30local barbers together to craft Madiba’s iconic haircut for the event and recreate the symbol of recollection and determination. Local artists including Sizwe ‘Reason’ Moeketsi, MsCosmo, Major League DJs and street drummers provided the backdrop for the day.
